AALSMEER (1958)

Aalsmeer takes its name from the words for 'eel' and 'lake': it's the site of the largest flower auction in the world, using the 'Dutch auction' method of a counter which starts at a high price and works down: the first buyer to decide it's low enough gets the purchase. My father took this photo of a fairly ordinary road on 31 July 1958: I'm not sure where it is.
