In the 1980s the Type M Mk 2 desks in the larger studios were replaced by 'GP' desks, mostly made by Calrec. These used standard modules which you could specify to build a desk to your requirements - the number of channels, and various facilities. These desks were extremely flexible and could handle very complex programmes. The picture shows one of the earliest to be installed, a Calrec GP Mk IV, installed in S7 in 1984 (the studio occupied the space which was originally studios S5 and S6 on the lower ground floor S.E.W., on the Strand side of the corridor).
