Back to 1935 for the last three pages: these pictures are taken from contact prints because the negatives no longer exist: most of them aren't good enough quality to display at the large size.




Three pictures of Alkmaar taken during my grandparents' visit there on 16th August 1935.

Above: the cheese market, still held weekly though now only as a demonstration for tourists.

Left: the 14th century Cheese Weigh House (one of the few left in Holland still actually used for weighing cheese, though not for real commerce). The top photo is of the bottom left-hand corner area of this photo.

Below: cheese porters in traditional uniform hump cheeses about for the benefit of the tourists.
