BBC Programme Index online

The BBC has set up an experimental online catalogue of its programmes, which if treated cautiously could be an excellent reference tool. It should be emphasized that this is not a catalogue of programmes actually existing in the Sound or TV Archives, nor are there any actual recordings: it's based on the Programme Index, which lists broadcasts irrespective of whether they were subsequently kept, so there are programmes listed which no longer exist (Alan Bennett's On The Margin, for example).

There are also many omissions: for example only some of the Goon Shows and Hancock's Half Hours are included. More seriously, in many cases repeat dates have been treated as original transmission dates, so that for example there are two editions of ITMA listed in 1992 - more than 45 years after the programme ended with Tommy Handley's death. This is why I said the information has to be treated with caution: in this case the error is obvious but there will be cases where misleading information may not be so easy to spot.

It's very commendable that the BBC has gone to the considerable effort of setting up this facility: and as it's experimental it's to be hoped that they will be able to iron the bugs out of it.
