Sometimes everything goes wrong (2)ime
was when television announcers used to appear in-shot when linking programmes or
closing down for the evening. The BBC regional centres went on doing this after
London had stopped. And another tradition which has lapsed was playing the
National Anthem, together with film of the Queen on horseback during the
Trooping of the Colour, at
closedown.
These two traditions clashed some years back. At the end of the evening on BBC1, viewers in the Midlands heard the National Anthem but saw a rather annoyed-looking announcer. Worse, viewers in London saw the film of the Queen, but heard an annoyed voice saying 'I knew some silly bugger would f*** this up sooner or later.'
