My
grandfather in his World War One
uniform in 1918. (This isn't the grandfather who took all the photos,
and married one of the ladies in the 'Three sisters' photo - this is my
father's father, Francis Samuel Wilmut - always known as Sam.) As he
was a maths teacher, he was placed in the Trigonometry Section,
plotting the
position of enemy guns from acoustic bearings taken from observer
positions. He looks a bit wary here: the Army haircut doesn't help. In
later life he got rid of the moustache, fortunately.
